Paramore: A year in review (December)

01/12/2012

Paramore update their website with a new splashpage that reads "If there is a future, we want it now".

Buzzworthy decide to lower the tone by relating the quote to a scarf... *sighs*

Hayley and Taylor make a playlist of their favourite songs of the year for Fueled By Ramen. Jeremy makes a playlist of his favourite Christmas songs for the label too. You can listen to all of the playlists here.

Paramore finally make an announcement about their upcoming album:
"The time has come Paramore fans, friends, and family... And for that matter, the time has come for the rest of you as well. We are ready to spill the beans about what we've been doing over the last *coughYEARcough*. With the most pride and passion we could ever possibly express, we would like to announce that this album, our fourth freaking album... Will be self-titled, 'Paramore'. It has been self-titled through nearly the entire process. In fact, what usually takes us weeks on end to sum up and put a label on only took us a five minute conversation this time around. The whole making of this album was a rediscovering of ourselves as a band and as friends. It was a process that allowed us the freedom to explore new territory artistically and to liberate ourselves as musicians, singers, as people! Sincerely, we feel that the best way to give it a name is just to call it what it is. This album is us.
The first single off the album is called "Now". Not really sure what else to say except for we love this song. It just feels like the perfect way to start this new journey we are embarking on not only as a band but as a movement. To show people that you can lose battles but come back and win full on wars. You can rise from ashes. You can make something out of even less than nothing. The only thing you have to do is keep moving forward!
Thanks to our fans for believing in the three of us before we ever even did. And to our producer, JMJ, for seeing a brand new band in us. We are prouder than ever and more excited now than ever to be Paramore. 'Paramore' will be released April 9th.
- Hayley, Jeremy, Taylor."

"is this thing still on?
hey guys, sorry to leave everyone hanging for so long.
going to keep this short because we actually have a few things coming up and i don't want to talk too much before just getting some other stuff out there. (could i be any more vague? no...)
all i want to say is that... it's been nice having alone time. it's been nice getting to know who i am outside of the band. basically, in the last year i've become a big time loner, for better or for worse. saw a crap ton of movies and went to some amazing shows. watched a lot of tv, from my couch, all alone. wrote a lot of lyrics that hopefully you will soon be singing. i hope that i've grown up a lot this year. though, growing up has nothing to do with knowing it all... and i certainly feel like there is much more to learn about living with myself.
i'm not exactly sure what next year is going to be like but i hope that you all know that most days the most genuine thing we see or experience will be you. the conversations we might have or the smiles we exchange at a show, tears, letters you've written... thank you in advance for whatever is going to happen. i can't stress this enough: we couldn't care less if it's a million hundred bajillion albums sold or if it's none and we play first on every bill for the rest of forever. you will still be the thing that is real about all of it. the joy and the drive behind it... besides the fact that we just love music... is you. in fact, it feels like the past 2 years of working to get here has all been a journey mixed with some growing pains just to get to you.
2013 here we come!

Hayley updated the band's LJ with this post:
"One week.
My apologies for not posting this one here first... I didn't have time to do any replies though this morning, so I figured waiting til I had just a little time would be best. Either way, in case you hadn't read it yet, here's a post from our Tumblr earlier today:
One week that I hardly even remember since we finished the record. I use the term “finished” lightly because even while I’m typing all this I’m listening to an unfinished mix of one of the new songs. The guys and I still have approvals of all those to go through, album art, masters… is this boring to read yet?
Well, at least let me tell you this before we all from excitement over here. We have the extreme pleasure of working with yet another of our heroes on our 4th album… as if this process wasn’t already unbelievable… Ken Andrews of Failure/Year of the Rabbit/ON (some of our biggest inspirations/influences as a band) is mixing this album for us! Between Ken, JMJ, and Roger Manning, Jr. we are sort of in a musical daze. The amount of talent that is going into what we’re a part of right now is awe-inspiring for us as music fans. As a band, it’s humbling. If you’re not familiar with any of these guys’ past work, please do yourself the grand favor of using The Google to research and discover what each of them have created respectively.
And if you’re interested in hearing an album that truly gave Paramore a beginning… then buy a copy of Failure’s ‘Fantastic Planet’. And if you’re bored now then there is simply no hope for the future.
So what now? Basically, we’ll be “off” and “on” for the next little while putting together all the pieces that will (hopefully) be in your very hands before you know it. Just thinking about it makes me dizzy. In the greatest way possible. Like first kiss, first show, first time seeing the Cheesecake Factory menu… that kind of dizzy. It’s been, what, 3 years since we put out an album? Life at home, alone with my thoughts is cool and all but it feels like my brain is swelling up inside my head. I think I need to do something besides cooking healthy meals and fixing up Martha Stewart paper-craft decor for each holiday season. Blahhh domestication. (Let’s get this show on the road please!!)
- hayley"

Hayley also updated the band's LJ with this post:
"good morning
it's a cloudy, perfect morning in Los Angeles... though i bet by the time i'm done writing this the sun will be absolutely raging in the sky, as usual. anyways, while i have a minute before the rest of the city wakes up, i figured i could come back here and write down (type out - 2012) some thoughts.
should i just say it, right up front? yeah, i can't keep secrets and what would be the point? here goes: we're about 2 weeks away from finishing this thing. our 4th album!
to be honest, a year ago... we were only speculating, hoping, praying about what this was going to sound like. what it would FEEL like. remember the Alternative Press cover story we did? the one where we acted so confident about how this whole thing was going to go down? i don't know who we were trying to convince more, you guys or ourselves! i mean, we obviously had a big dream of what album 4 would be like and the brightness that the songs would sort of radiate. it just didn't always seem like we were going to get there. now, we are getting ready to wrap it all up and a tie a nice little bow around it. it's humbling to see the light at the end of the tunnel. to know that we accepted the challenge, took the journey and never looked back.
there are only a few more songs to finish and just like the rest of them, they are all very dear to us. fitting, the way that these songs laid out that the last one on our to-do list is the first of all the ideas i'd ever written down. i can still remember picking two strings of my guitar over and over again and singing the words into my iphone recorder thinking, "this probably won't make it to the album..." but i liked it just for myself 'cause the words made me feel better.
it took us a bit to finish it. let's see, i started it in early 2011 and we didn't get it done 'til... this past spring? (damn.) we just weren't really sure where to go with it because nothing seemed to give us the same feeling as what was already there. then one day, as the 3 of us and JMJ (our producer, for those just joining the party) were sitting in the studio lounge just messing with whatever random instruments were there that day, the song just fell from heaven into our heart brains and that's my cool story bro. that was that day we knew the song would most definitely make it to the album. i couldn't be more excited that you guys will get to hear it. it's an important piece of the puzzle and for me, a very important part of our entire story.
really though, what if in a few weeks we were like... "JUST KIDDING GUYS!!! we haven't been making an album, we've just been living in LA getting sunburned and eating tons of vegan desserts!" that would make you mad, right? ok, 'cause that's not what we've been doing. sort of. ok, we have been doing those things but we were mostly making an album.
love, hayley
ps, sorry for not proofreading this B. i just woke up and i'm sure there are a lot of run-on sentences, ramblings, and misuses of commas."

15/09/2012

Hayley updated the band's tumblr with this post:
"…to be happy now.
Fair warning. i am allllll over the place tonight! so hopefully, you guys can follow along down these rabbit trails…
we’re officially a little over half-way through the tracking of this album. it feels real-er than ever. i’m starting to understand all these songs more and where they’ve actually come from… for a minute, it was such a whirlwind of inspiration, emotion, and sweat. now that we’ve spent some time getting to know the album and growing with it, i can finally tell myself it’s real. i can just almost tell myself that it’s alright to relax.
Have you ever been that way? haven’t you ever said “things are so great right now that i know something’s bound to go wrong… any minute.” just so you know, i might be the QUEEN of that phrase. maybe it’s part of being a total realist? maybe it’s just the fact that i’ve been through some rough situations and i know how awful it feels not to be prepared for the worst? it’s been a while since i didn’t have my fists in a ball… since i wasn’t sort of on the defense, waiting for the attack. if there was an actual good reason for why i lived that way for so long i’d give it to you but now that i’m (hopefully!) passed that, it’s a little unclear as to why that would ever be worth it. because now i wake up every morning and i know for certain that there are at least a few good people around me, if not physically then just by an iPhone somewhere, who could look me in the eye and tell me that they love me. i’ve got just enough blood in my veins and air in my lungs to know that i am definitely not dead. and that could be enough to say outloud, to myself… “You’re OK!”
Another thing to consider is what if there is a part of us that doesn’t fully want to be satisfied? what if there’s something that asks us: if everything is “OK” then what do we have to strive for? to LIVE for, even? that’s the constant duel in my spirit! i want life to go smoothly but when it’s all working out… i’m sort of bored. ugh. it reminds me of a lyric by mewithoutYou that i’ve always connected with so deeply. “All I want is to want one thing.” how beautifully that depicts our nature as humans to want everything, sometimes multiple things at once that couldn’t be more opposite… and in the end get upset with the whole thing and want to get rid of desire altogether. (i digress!)
what i’ve had to learn during this last year and a half, is that i might actually just be happy with where life is heading at this point. doesn’t mean i’ll always feel this way. nothing’s perfect… at least for very long! anyway, it might just be OK to be happy now. right now in this very moment. i should just go with it, right? by the way, if i don’t sound completely insane to you after 3 paragraphs which all are complete contradictions to each other then i appreciate your patience and flexible perspective.
all this to say, i feel happy and i feel like my soul is actually being fulfilled. not only by the making of this album but also by the few close relationships i have in my life that have either stood the test of time or have bloomed from virtually nothing since entering whatever phase of my life i’m in at the moment. i’m not waiting for the sky to fall because i know that while the sky is staying up there in it’s place, i have my opportunity to live. no more wasting time, hope, emotions, on worrying when, if, or how i could ever be let down again. i’m going to tell myself it’s okay to be happy now.
i guess i want to finish this off by asking you what fulfills you. what is it that reaches your soul? it doesn’t have to be some profound thing or even anything cool. if you can hold that one thing in your mind and know that you’re exactly who you are supposed to be in that moment, then that could be all you need to get from point A to point B. maybe i want to finish THAT by saying, let’s all listen to “One Thing” by One Direction and sing it to each other. you’ve got that one thing and guess what? it doesn’t even need to be named. cause you just know and so does One Direction.
ok, i don’t know how you made it to the end of this…. love you, mean it.
Hayley"

Taylor and Hayley get new tattoos from Dan Smith.

Taylor hasn't told us the actual meaning of his tattoo, but YORGA could either mean York or (in Australian aboriginal) girl. It could also be an abbreviation or nickname, but a dedication to his family name seems most likely.

Hayley has told us the meaning of her TCB tattoo. It's an Elvis quote ("Taking care of Business). She described it as an "Elvis thing/family tradition", and said that she's been "wearing the necklace for years".

Oh, and surprise surprise, Buzzworthy wrote an article on Hayley's tattoo. Just Hayley's.

Hayley updates the band tumblr with the following post:
"Bad grammar and run on sentences weeeeeee
If I remember correctly, this time last year we were somewhere on the opposite side of the world playing shows to people that we could’ve never imagined would know who we are or the songs we’ve written. It was such an exciting time to be in this band, with all sorts of new experiences and hurdles we were actually looking forward to jumping over. The highest of them being a new album - our fourth full length album, to be exact - that would need writing and recording. We told everyone, fans and journalist, family, friends… everyone, that we were determined for this album to be a defining point in our career. Not for any reason other than that we would make this recording process the most enjoyable and the most liberating experience we’ve ever spent creating anything in the history of our band. While there were a few points early on that I felt it was going to be another stressful and severely taxing road to travel, a few months went by and we got into whatever “groove” we’re in now. Making this album is the reason that our band ever began. I don’t know if it’s going to be the biggest and most successful thing we’ve ever done… who even wants to know that sort of stuff ahead of time? I can’t be 100% sure if every fan or critic who’s ever enjoyed Paramore will enjoy all these songs as well. None of us know anything except for the fact that it is, hands down, our favorite body of work to date. And a whole year from the night I wrote the first set of lyrics and melodies that would end up on our fourth album, it feels good to be able to say with all honestly how much we love what we’re doing right now.
A quick update on how things are actually going in the studio… we are 4 or 5 songs in. We like to record entire songs one at a time so we can actually hear how it’s coming together in real time rather than being all over the place with a million parts of a million songs all at once. Hence the reason only being a handful of songs in might seem a bit underwhelming to everyone outside our immediate bubble.
Seeing as most of the residents of our immediate creative bubble are back on tour duty… Our producer, JMJ, is out with Beck and we’re going on a mini tour that includes opening for The Cure at Reading and Leeds Festival (AHHHH!!!!)… we’ve taken a short break from making album #4 to see if we’ve still got what it takes to get out there and melt faces. I’ve got my hopes up and I don’t like to be let down.
The guys and I are pretty psyched on our setlist and just playing shows in general. All I’m going to say is that I’ve had to actually go and buy a couple Paramore albums again in order to refresh my failing memory on some of the lyrics. So, just to prepare yourself, you might want to brush up on some of those older ones too. Wouldn’t want to be caught singing the wrong words, right? How embarrassing.

Hayley wrote a LJ post on album number four:
"So, I figured since this is the first time that we're "really" talking about it, i would start here. because after all this is where everything started in the first place. well besides Jeremy's living room and our PureVolume profile. this is where we met some of you and built a relationship from afar with so many who, even all these years later, still support our band.
We're only about 2 weeks away from actually putting music to tape. no, we aren't recording this album analog but hopefully you'll understand the expression. we've already gone through all the songs that we have hoped would make it this far and they - about 19 - of them are ready to be recorded. this doesn't mean that we are going to have that many tracks on the album but it does mean that for the first time in the history of our band, we are going to record more than we actually need for an album and end up with more than a few extra tracks to play around with after the fact. it's really been a fun process for us.
By now, you know our producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen is fully involved with every part of this process. we spent a week jamming out a handful of songs a day with him and even wrote a few parts to songs with him that were missing or that just needed extra care. it was all vital to what we will do when we're back to actually hit record. honestly, it was a lot less of a real chore than i thought it might be. pre-production could go either way... at the end of the day you're ripping songs apart to put them back together again. it either works or it doesn't... and thankfully, with all of us more encouraged than ever, we were ready for the challenge of making each song as great as it could be. they'll only get better too. you've never listened to a paramore song as much as i'm about to listen to every rough mix we get back from these recording sessions. i am the original paramore fangirl.
Over the next week or two, i'm going to be posting a little more often to our tumblr (paramore.tumblr.com) with little blogs about song subject matter or even just tiny updates about what's going on in the studio. plus, now we have instagram... ("paramorestudio") holy social networking, batman! oh, and don't forget taylor has his own instagram. he likes to compete with jerm and i for the most likes. usually he wins and i told him it's just because all the girls have crushes on him since he's the youngest and cutest. (J.Timberlake of paramore, am i right or am i right?)
Anyways, i only have one more chorus worth of lyrics to write before i'm done. we started writing these songs about a year ago... i can't believe it's all about to happen!
Remember to check the tumblr. talk to you soon,
Hayley from Paramore"

Hayley updates the band's tumblr:
"Hey hey,
Well… as promised, I’m back here doing a blog. Writing a blog. This weekend is the first time in over a week that I’ve been all on my lonesome. We’ve had family, friends, and co-workers in and out of here, visiting or helping us with various things… such as stay sane while off the road. My sister just left yesterday morning. She visited me all week and we basically did everything there is to do here in Los Angeles. Found ourselves in that infamous traffic all week long. Even so, we still walked to the Hollywood sign, sat on a cliff in Malibu (right near our old band house during BNE recording sessions), talked about boys, spent a day at Disneyland, and hung at the Warped tour. Great week, right? Now, it’s all quiet. Now, what?
Ugh, I’d like to take a few sentences to complain about these longish claw nails I had put on for the hell of it. How does anyone type with these things? How does Katy Perry tweet? How does Gaga play her keytar? Anyways….
Since I’m feeling particularly alone right about now, I thought it’d be a good time to talk about one of the songs we’ll be recording for the new album. It’s kind of fun to get into subject matter without any of you actually have heard the song or even knowing the exact words to it. The song is not as much about feeling lonely as it is enjoying the simple state of being alone. For instance, on a Saturday night, like tonight. I quite enjoy the opportunity to cook a meal for myself and sit on the couch watching Pretty Woman all night if that’s what I feel like. Read a book. Write a song. You get the point. Basically, I don’t mind spending some time by myself. It’s something that I’ve always learned a lot from.
Over the last four years or so, Paramore got busier and spent more time working on tour than we did at home. I sort of forgot how much I loved, even needed, my alone time. But the past year, being as “slow” as it was… I was able to sort of refocus all that nervous, busy energy and learn once again how nice a night-in can be. In fact, I spend most nights “in”, unless there’s work, family, or some important event going on. It’s probably a phase and life is very much like a pendulum… So, by the time this really gets around, I could be raging every night. (See: sober-raging, for reference). All this to say, I’ve talked to many people who say that they really don’t like to be alone. That they can’t shut their mind off when there’s no one around talking to them or when the music isn’t loud. It takes practice. And truly, it’s worth getting good at.
The other side of this is how reclusive I’ve become as of late. Like I said, I love my time alone. With only one or two close friends. I’m pretty weary of people getting close to me and whether or not it’s a positive or a negative thing, I’m not too concerned right now. What matters is I feel good about it. And as we already discussed, it’s most likely some phase but I’m learning nonetheless. It just seems like most people my age are going through the exact opposite phase. For some reason, I needed to write it out, how I felt about the social ladder, overactive social lives… and my lack of any sort of care in the world about it all.
Geez, what a long winded explanation. Think about it though. Spend some time with yourself if you haven’t. I’m no therapist but it seems like it couldn’t hurt. Certainly does wonders for me. In fact, writing run-on sentences and blogging all this nonsense is one of my favorite quiet things to do. I’ll be writing these more often now that we are headed back into the studio… so come on back to this bloggy blog any ol’ time you wanna “be alone” with me.
HW on be-third of Paramore."

Hayley updated the band's website with the following post, informing fans that the band had picked their fourth album's producer, Justin Meldal-Johnsen:
"It's April... Honestly, I don't believe how fast the months go by anymore. The older I get the faster time flies. The other day I was looking at my calendar from last year (which was, admittedly, a lot less full than I had hoped it would be...) and thinking of how I was dreading how slowly it might go by. I've never known what it's like to be home for more than a few weeks at a time that absolutely nothing is going on. The only thing I could think about was if we could snap our fingers and make the 4th album happen so that the next time I looked up, we'd be back on a stage somewhere and not sitting around at home. But you can't just make things like that happen. For something to be great, there has to be some kind of trial or some type of struggle that actually makes it special or valuable to you. Otherwise, anything could be easily taken for granted.
There's no reason to lie about it, the first few months of writing were ridiculously draining and a lot more of a pain than a pleasure. It was supposed to be fun right? We made it all the way to this point to just struggle some more. So, you can probably imagine that when the flood gates burst this past January and inspiration started filling us up again, we were more than willing to let it take us wherever it wanted. We've written a lot of songs I never thought we would write. And we aren't done yet! The writing will continue even as we enter the studio... Which, of course, is what I'm writing you about right now.
The guys and I went in to record a song for our 4th album about a week and a half ago. Except that we weren't exactly sure how it was going to go or that the end result would be something we actually wanted to use, it was all very exciting. At the end of our time in the studio, it was clear to us that this was definitely right! So without delaying any longer, we would like to announce that our 4th album's producer is Justin Meldal-Johnsen. And what the heck, we might as well tell you that the one song we recorded will be called "Daydreaming". (It's the one we "tweeted" about writing in a hotel room in LA back in Feb).
In case you can't tell, we're working on a pretty strange schedule, by our standards. There has never been so much time and care put into a Paramore album. Usually, we are rushing to make a very strict deadline which so far has just not been right for this record. We cannot assure you it will be out this year. What we can tell you is that from now on, when we go in to create this thing, whether for a day at a time or for a month, you will be kept more informed. It is a total joy to make our fans/family a part of what we do because we couldn't do it without you anyway.
Phew! It feels so good to get all that out there... Felt like I was going to word vomit on twitter or something if I didn't write this soon.
The guys and I have been constantly amazed at the enthusiasm and excitement we've seen on fansites/blogs/in handwritten letters/and elsewhere. Again, we just want to say thank you for your patience and the way you've kept us hungry to make music and to play shows. This is a very incredible life to live and you have all been the best reminder of that.
See you around the internet, surfing Tumblr and Twitter and all that mess... But not Facebook. I don't know how to use it.
Dispatching for Paramore, Hayley"

Neon-limelight seemed to be running out of things to write about judging by this blog post on Hayley's mad draw-something skills.

The second annual Wear your Paramore shirt day occurred, thanks to the lovely @paramoreUK_IRE for organising it. It was yet another great success, with even Hayley joining in, and writing a short tumblr post on the holiday.

"I’m contributing to Wear Your Paramore Shirt Day! Yes, there is in fact an annual holiday for such a thing. What can I say? Paramore fans are rad.
This happens to be my favorite P-more shirt ever made. It was the first band merch Fueled By Ramen ever made for us… and we only gave them out to people who pre-ordered our first album, All We Know Is Falling. So there’s that story.
*edit* changed the pic cause the other one’s up on .net!"

MTV Buzzworthy posted about Wear your Paramore shirt day. Not because we could use the publicity... nope. Because Hayley wore a Paramore shirt and looked "supercute" whilst doing so.

Oh Buzzworthy.
